Meditation is a powerful tool for clarity and balance, spiritual growth, stress management, anger control, anxiety, awareness, change, creativity, and personal/professional growth.
Meditation is often described as a training of mental attention that helps us to calm down the emotional chatter in our heads, teach us awareness, relaxation, without the judgement of questioning ourselves "if we are doing it right." There are many different form of meditation. The length of mediation varies from person to person and can be short (ten minutes) to an hour or longer. For my personal daily use of mediation I spend an average of 15 minutes twice daily.
What is Meditation?
Mediation refers to a group of techniques to help you regulate the flow of your emotions and thoughts. It has been practiced for thousands of years. It was originally developed to help deepen the understanding of the inner aspects of life. In the 21st century it became demystified and is used on counseling practices to help reduce tension, pain, anxiety and stress. A person learns how to redirect their stream of thoughts, negative inner chatter, or negative thinking to focusing on their breath, a mantra, or their steps as they walk.
There are several different types of medication options. These are only a few:
The focus is on a mantra, or a sound, word or phrase that is repeated over and over to create awareness of the present moment. The purpose of the practice is to keep distracting thoughts from being in your conscious awareness.
Learn to focus on your breathing. Learn to become mindful and aware of observing your every inhalation and exhalation, as your chest rises and falls, your belly rises and falls, as you count form 1 to 4 as your breathe in and from 1 to 8 as your breathe out, focusing on the coolness in your nose on the inhale, the warmth in your nose as you breath out, watching your belly rise and fall as your breath in and out, and keeping the breath smooth as you maintain the practice. As you learn to slow your breathing down, you take in more oxygen in and make your breathing more efficient as you reduce the use of your shoulder muscles, your chest muscles, and your neck muscles.
Learning to focus on an object and thinking about its deeper meaning, Spiritual concepts, passages, or the focus on how precious life is. The goal is to focus on the feeling of empathy and compassion towards others and towards yourself.
